The broad Delaware River makes up the entire eastern border of Pennsylvania. Philadelphia sits in the southeast corner on the shores of the river. Just a little further west sits the state capital of Harrisburg.
The region’s steel and coal towns have passed their high times perhaps, but many have found new industries and commerce to vitalize their population.
This large eastern U.S. state is rich with natural beauty, lakes, rivers, hills, and mountains, and blessed with a full four seasons of weather. Fishing, rafting, camping, and hunting are popular pastimes for locals and for Pennsylvania visitors.

Before the Commonwealth was settled by Europeans, the area was home to the Delaware, Susquehannock, Iroquois, Eriez, Shawnee, and other American Indian Nations. Both the Dutch and the English claimed both sides of the Delaware River as part of their colonial lands in America. The Dutch were the first to take its possession, then the English.

By early 1776, Pennsylvania was a powerful force in colonial America. It was then that England's king imposed new taxes on the colonies. Outraged citizens and merchants in Philadelphia and in all of the colonies began to resist and rebel, and the talk of independence was in the air. Finally the Declaration of Independence was signed in Philadelphia on July 4^th 1776.

Casino gambling was recently legalized in Pennsylvania. Currently, there are 9 casinos across the state with 3 under construction or in planning.

Itinerary

Length: 284km

Our route through Pennsylvania starts in Lamberville where we cross the Delaware River and the State Line.  Then we follow back roads West-South-West and go through the French Creek State Park, through the towns of Lancaster, York, Gettysburg and Waynesboro. It is still pretty flat, with only a big hill to climb before Waynesboro and the State Line with Maryland.

 

Le fleuve Delaware délimite tout du long la frontière Est de la Pennsylvanie. Philadelphie se situe dans l’angle Sud-Est de l’Etat, au bord de la rivière. La capitale, Harrisburg, se situe un peu plus à l’Ouest.

Les régions métallurgiques et les villes minières se sont pour la plupart recyclées dans de nouvelles industries et nouveaux marchés.

Ce grand état de l’est des USA est plein de beautés naturelles, lacs, rivières, collines et montagnes, et bénéficie d’un vrai climat de 4 saisons. La pêche, la chasse, le rafting, le camping sont les activités les plus populaires pour les habitants autant que pour les touristes en Pennsylvanie.

Avant que le Commonwealth soit mis en place par les Européens, le lieu était habité par les Delaware, Susquehannock, Iroquois, Eriez, Shawnee, et autres tribus d’Indiens d’Amérique. Les Anglais et les Hollandais se sont battus longtemps pour la colonisation de la Pennsylvanie et du Delaware. Les Hollandais en seront les premiers colons puis les Anglais.

Début 1776, quand le roi d’Angleterre décida d’ajouter de nouveaux impôts pour les colonies, la Pennsylvanie était devenue une grande puissance de l’Amérique colonisée. Les citoyens et marchants de Philadelphie et partout dans les colonies, indignés et scandalisés, commencent la résistance et se révoltent. L’indépendance est dans l’air. Finalement, la Déclaration d’indépendance est signée à Philadelphie le 4 Juillet 1776.

Itinéraire

Longueur: 284km

Notre route à travers la Pennsylvanie commence à Lamberville où l’on traverse le fleuve Delaware et la frontière d’Etat. Ensuite on continue sur des plus ou moins petites routes généralement Ouest-Sud-Ouest. On traversera le Parc National French Creek et les villes de Lancaster, York, Gettysburg et Waynesboro. C’est toujours relativement plat avec seulement une grosse colline à grimper avant Waynesboro et la frontière avec le Maryland.
