End of Ohio, Indiana... that is flat!
Day 22 – Friday 30th
We crossed Cincinnati today. As much as Jason is a city boy and doesn’t like bugs, I’m a country girl, and I don’t like the city traffic (especially with Java in the trailer). That brought some tension through the day I have to admit. We crossed the Ohio River and spend few hours in Kentucky. We went to the Devou Park in Covington to see the lookout on the city. And we crossed the Ohio River again few kilometres west of the city, on a ferry. The Ohio River actually belongs to Kentucky. If you fish in the river from the Ohio side, you still need a Kentucky fishing license!
We stopped at North Bend, at the boat club where Mike and Cie welcomed us with open arms. We spent a good night and got invited for a good breakfast in the morning.
We did 60km today.
Aujourd’hui on a traverse Cincinnati. Autant Jason est un garcon de la ville et n’aime pas les insectes, autant je suis une fille de la campagne, et je n’aime pas le trafic en ville (d’autant plus avec Java dans la remorque). Ca a ammene un peu de tension tout au long de la journee, je dois admettre…On a traverser le fleuve Ohio et passe quelques heures au Kentucky. On est monte au Parc Devou dans Covington pour profiter du panorama sur la ville. Et on a traverse le fleuve une deuxieme fois quelques kilometres a l’ouest de la ville en ferry. Le fleuve Ohio appartient en fait au Kentucky. Pour pecher dans la riviere du cote Ohio, il faut un permis de peche du Kentucky!
On s’est arrete a North Bend pour la nuit, au club de peche ou Mike et Cie nous ont accueillis les bras ouverts. On y a passe une bonne nuit et avons meme ete invites pour un bon petit dej’ le matin. On a fait 60km aujourd’hui.

Day 23 – Saturday 31st
We stopped at William Harrison’s memorial in North Bend in the morning. He was the ninth president of the United States and the only president who died in his functions. He stayed on function only 32days.
We went from North Bend to Hueston Woods State Park. About 70km. Took a camping site. We didn’t have a really good day, some arguments, but the evening was good.
On s’est arrete ce matin pour visiter le memorial de William Harrison a North Bend. Il a ete le 9eme president des Etats-Unis et le seul president mort en fonction. Il a en fait ete en fonction seulement 32 jours.
On est alle de North Bend a HHueston Woods State Park. Environ 70km. On a pris un emplacement de camping dans le parc. La journee n’a pas ete tres bonne, on s’est un peu pris la tete, mais la soiree a ete bonne.
Day 24 – Sunday August 1st
We met a volunteer for the American Discovery Trail this morning as we were living the State Park. He offered us a drink and we spoke a bit. He spent 15 years in the American Discovery Trail cabin, just on the border of the trail, and we are actually the first people he have seen so far to do it by bicycle! lol
We travelled north this morning and pedaled for about 5 miles on the state line, with Ohio on one side of the road and Indiana on the other side. We finally completely crossed to Indiana beginning of afternoon. We had lunch at Richmond, IN. And we travelled 20 more miles north-west in the corn. This is really the state for the corns. And it is so high that we cannot even see more than the first line of corn on each side of the road. And when corn there is, flying ants there are. We ride mouth closed, eyes half open and helmet in front!
We stopped at Losantville after 85km.
On a rencontre un benevole de l’American Discovery Trail ce matin alors que l’on quittait le parc national. Il nous a offert a boire et on a discute un peu. Il a passe 15 ans dans la cabane de l’American Discovery Trail, juste sur le bord de la route, et on est les premieres personnes qu’il voit a le faire en velo! lol
On a voyage vers le nord ce matin et on a pedale sur la frontiere pendant environ 7 km, avec l’Ohio d’un cote de la route et l’Indiana de l’autre cote!
On a finalement completement traverse pour l’Indiana en debut d’apres-midi. On s’est arrete a Richmond pour le repas du midi. Puis on est repartis pour 30 km de plus, Nord-Ouest, au milieu du mais. C’est definitivement l’etat du mais. Et il est tellement grand, que l’on ne voit rien de plus que la premiere rangee de mais de chaque cote de la route. Et qui dit mais, dit fourmis volantes ! On avance bouche fermee, yeux a demi clos et casque en avant !
On s’est arretes a Losantville pour la nuit, apres 85km.
Day 25 – Monday August 2nd
We are now traveling on flat land, seeing nothing but corn and soya beans fields on each side of the roads. We took the Cardinal Greenway almost all day though. It is a really nice trail and it brings us in more diversified landscapes. We had lunch at Muncie. We met Robert – ‘the black guy from Indiana’ as he named himself, a really nice who offered us some help for the trip. We pedaled 85km today, we stopped for the night few kilometres after Marion.
On voyage maintenant en terre plate, ne voyant rien d’autre que des champs de mais et de soja de chaque cote des routes. On a pris la Cardinal Grennway presque toute la journee cependant. C’est une voie verte vraiment sympa qui nous emmene a travers de paysages plus diversifies. On s’est arretes a Muncie a midi. On y a rencontre Robert – ‘ le black d’Indiana’ comme il se surnomme lui-meme, qui nous a offert son support pour notre aventure. On a pedale 85km aujourd’hui. On s’est arrete pour la nuit quelques kilometres apres Marion.
Day 26 – Tuesday 3rd
It rained part of the night and it started to rain again this morning just as we were finishing the breakfast. We waited few hours for the biggest part of the storm to be gone, playing cards (I lose every time). Finally, we took benefits of a little break in the rain to reach the little town of Sweetser, just few miles away and had a nice warm lunch there. The rain totally stopped when we took our bikes again. We crossed Mississinewa Park and went around its beautiful lake. Then we headed to Peru. About 2 kilometers before getting to Peru, one of Jason’s bike’s back wheel spoke snapped. He already got this wheel trued twice, the best thing is to replace the wheel anyway, so we kept on going until finding a bike shop in Peru. He got his wheel fixed and the guy from the shop offered us to camp in his property in Denver if we wanted. We went for some groceries and rode to Denver. We stopped there for the night on the border of the river. Nice for Java who loves to jump in the water and Jason who still tries to catch a fish…
We did 80km.
Il a plu une partie de la nuit et il a recommence a pleuvoir ce matin alors que l’on finissait juste le petit dejeuner. On a donc attendu quelques heures que le plus gros de l’orage soit passe et on a joue au cartes sur le bord du chemin (je perds a chaque fois). Finalement, on a profite d’un petit declin de la pluie pour rejoindre la petite ville de Sweetser a seulement quelques kilometres de la. Et on a pris un bon repas chaud la-bas. La pluie s’etait totalement arretee quand on a repris les velos. On a traverse Mississinewa Park et fait le tour du magnifique lac. Puis on est partis direction Peru. A environ 2 kilometres de Peru, un rayon de la roue arriere du velo de Jason a pete. Il l’a deja fait devoile 2 fois, la meilleure chose a faire est de remplacer totalement la roue de toutes facons. On a donc continue jusqu'à trouver un magasin de velos a Peru. On a fait repare la roue et nous sommes fait gentiment invites a poser notre camp dans la propriete du technicien a Denver. On est donc alle faire quelques courses puis avons fait les quelques kilometres jusqu’a Denver. On y a installe notre camp sur le bord de la riviere. Cool pour Java qui adore sauter dans l’eau et Jason qui essaye toujours d’attraper son premier poisson…
On a fait 80km.
Day 27 – Wednesday 4th
Long and boring day. Constant wind from the West and long long long roads heading directly to the West…
Anyway, we did good and we made it to Roseland, not far from the State line. We did 110km against the wind and took a well deserved and appreciated camp site in the closest campground we found!
Longue et pas tres interressante journee aujourd’hui. Vent de l’Ouest constant et longues longues longues routes allant droit vers l’ouest…
Malgre tout, on a ete plutot bons et sommes arrives jusqu'à Roseland, pas bien loin de la frontiere. On a parcouru 110km contre le vent et avons finalement pose la tente dans le premier camping que l’on a trouve (bien merite et bien apprecie!)
