Illinois... more corn and more wind!
Day 28 – Thursday 5th
We though yesterday was windy… Today was horribly windy! And as we are travelling NNW, the wind is blowing from WNW. Plus it is fake flat going slightly uphill all day along and the sun is burning. Really tiring day!
Anyway, we passed the border with Illinois beginning of afternoon and travelled on the state line for few miles. We crossed a bridge about 1 foot above the river!
Mid-afternoon, we stopped in front of a house to refill our water bottles. That’s how we met Lori. She gave us some water (with ice), some Gatorade, and some fruits. She made our day! Thanks Lori!
We finally got to the outskirt of Chicago end of afternoon. We stopped there for the line after 80 hard kilometres.
Le vent nous a enerve hier… c’etait rien compare a aujourd’hui! On a pedale Nord Nord Ouest toute la journee avec un vent terrible venant d’Ouest Nord Ouest toute la journee. Et juste au cas ou ce ne soit pas assez, c’etait en faux plat montant toute journee, le tout avec un soleil brulant… Journee vraiment fatiguante !
Peu importe, on a passe la frontiere avec l’Illinois en debut de matinee. On a suivi la frontiere sur plusieurs kilometres. On a traverse un pont, a peine 30cm au dessus de la riviere !
En milieu d’apres-midi, on s’est arrete frapper a une porte pour remplir nos gourdes. Et c’est la que l’on a rencontre Lori. Elle nous a donne de l’eau (avec galocons), du Gatorade, et des fruits. Elle a rafraichi notre journee ! Merci Lori !
On est finalement arrives dans la banlieue de Chicago en fin d’apres-midi et on s’est arretes la pour la nuit apres 80 durs kilometres.
Day 29 – Friday 6th
Good day today. We did 120km with a beautiful but not too hot sun and almost no wind (compared to the last days). We took the Old Plank Trail this morning from Steger to Joliet. That’s where we met Bill and his wife who where travelling in the opposite direction. Bill is a passionated bicycle rider; he already crossed the US by bicycle himself and puts 5000 miles a year on his bike. When he saw us, he stopped and asked us where we were going. After few minutes only he decided to come with us and show us the way through Joliet. Finally he took us through Joliet and rode some more miles with us on the I&M trail to Channahon. He offered us lunch there and headed back home. Another person who made our day! And it is so good to not have to navigate for few hours J.
We continued on the I&M trail to Marseilles where we camped in the State Park campground on the other side of the Illinois River.
These two trails are really nice!
Bonne journee aujourd’hui. On a fait 120km avec un beau soleil mais pas trop chaud et presque pas de vent (compare aux jours precedents). On a pris la voie verte Old Plank Trail ce matin de Steger a Joliet. Et on a rencontre Bill et sa femme qui allaient dans la direction opposee. Bill est un cycliste passionne, il a deja traverse les US en velo lui-meme et pedale environ 8000km par an ! Quand il nous a vu, il s’est arrete et nous a demande ou l’on allait. Apres quelques minutes, il a decide de faire demi-tour et nous accompagner jusqu'à la sortie de Joliet car la piste cyclable s’arrete au milieu d’un quartier pas tres recommandé. Finallement, il a fait encore quelques kilometres de plus avec nous sur la voie verte I&M Trail jusqu'à Channahon. Il nous a paye le repas la-bas puis a fait demi-tour pour rentrer chez lui. Voila une autre personne qui a ensoleille notre journee ! Et c’est tellement bon de ne pas avoir a sortir la carte pendant quelques heures J.
On a continue sur cette voie verte jusqu'à la petite ville de Marseilles ou l’on a passe la nuit au camping du parc de l’autre cote du fleuve Illinois.
Ces deux voies vertes sont vraiment sympa, ombragees et bien entretenues, tres agreables !
Day 30 – Saturday 7th
We rode 30km on the I&M trail again this morning. Them we took the roads for another 30km. We would almost have forget the up hills, the wind, the corn and the burning sun without that but that was a good reminder! Then we got to the Hennepin Canal trail, where we pedalled another 30km. We stopped in a primitive camp site on the border of the trail.
On a fait 30km de plus sur le I&M trail ce matin. Ensuite on est repartis sur les routes pour un autre 30km. On aurait presque oublie les montees, le vent, le mais et le soleil brulant sans ca, mais c’etait une bonne piqure de rappel!
On est finalement arrive sur une autre voie verte, le Hennepin Canal Trail, ou l’on a pedale un autre 30km avant de s’arreter sur un site de camping sur le bord du chemin.
Day 31 – Sunday 8th
We rode on the Hennepin Canal Trail again this morning for about 40miles. We got through severals storms and finally had to stop for the last one which was pretty violent! We had lunch while waiting for the rain to stop. About 15 minutes after starting again, Jason blew up his tire. And after fixing it, realized that he also had a broken spoke. Impossible for us to fix it. I have spare spokes but we don’t have the proper tool to take the sprockets off the back wheel and we need that to be able to replace the spoke. Luckily a really nice couple who just brough their dog for a swim on the other side of the canal offered us a ride to the next store where they could have the right tool. Unfortunately, they didn’t have the good size to match Jason’s wheel. Finally Noel and Heather drove us to Bettendorf (just beside Davenport) to try to find a bike shop. It was closed when we arrived so we took a motel room for the night and we will go there tomorrow morning.
On a fait environ 60km de plus sur le Hennepin Canal aujourd’hui. On est passe au travers de plusieurs orages mais avons finalement du nous arrete pour le dernier qui etait un peu trop violent. On en a profite pour pique niquer en attendant que la pluie se calme.
Pas de chance, 15 minutes seulement apres avoir redemarre, Jason explose son pneu et sa chambre a air. Il repare tout ca et commence a remonter quand il se rend compte qu’il a aussi pete un rayon. J’ai des rayons de rechange mais on n’a pas l’outil necessaire pour enlever les pignons de la roue arriere. Heureusement, un couple vraiment gentil qui etait juste en promenade avec leur chien de l’autre cote du canal nous propose de nous emmener au magasin le plus proche qui pourrait avoir l’outil dont on a besoin. Malheureusement, il n’ont pas la bonne taille. Noel et Heather nous ont donc emmene jusqu'à Bettendorf, a cote de Davenport a un autre magasin de velo, qui evidemment venait de ferme quand on est arrive. On a donc pris un motel pas loin pour la nuit et on reviendra au magasin demain matin pour reparer le velo.
On a donc traverse le Mississipi et la frontiere avec l’Iowa aujourd’hui.
